It’s not too late to show Black businesses some love this month

I didn’t get the memo! Did you know that August is Black business month?

I guess it’s never too late to support Black-owned businesses. So, to end the month, I put together a list of Black-owned businesses that I support and I think you should support them too.

Check out my list below and make sure to drop a link to Black-owned businesses you love and support in the comments.

Over the past year, I realized that I can’t keep it together alone. I was in search of the perfect planner and Alaina Fingal founder and owner of The Organized Money made it happen. Check her out on YouTube and Instagram.

Loaf Art & Design based in Detroit, Mich. specializes in logos, advertising, websites, illustrations, and infographics. The company’s founder Kofi Myler, does advertising banners, illustrations and other graphics including the Black Like Us and Notes from a Black Girl logos.

The team at Professional Bookkeepers works to help businesses keep their books straight. The company is also based in Detroit and has a team of professional bookkeepers to help you manage your financial story.

Natroil is a premium grooming and lifestyle brand based in Flint, Mich. They specialize in men’s grooming products but also cater to women with some of their oils and other body care items. The liquid black soap, incense line and beard kits are all wonderful.

My daughter and I fell in love with Sea the Crown after I bumped into its founder and owner, Tasjanae Shahid, at a booth in Las Vegas. They specialize in natural products including oils and body butters.

If you liked any of our videos since we kicked off, you thank Jamal Bransford founder of Naavah Media. Bransford teamed up with me last year to produce video content for Black Like Us including From Defeated to Driven which was nominated for a 2022 NABJ Salute to Excellence award. See more of our work below.

Brooklyn Body Butter was founded in 2017 in Detroit, Mich. The company produces natural body butters that are scented for both men and women. My daughter uses the Baby Powder body butter and my son uses the Man Body Butter.

Juvia’s place

I have a ton of lipstick and eyeshadow palettes from this brand. Their line can also be found in Ulta stores.

When the founder of The Lip Bar was turned down on the popular business investment television show, she didn’t stop. Instead, she continued to produce bomb-ass cosmetics and now has a number of brick-and-mortar stores and the brand is sold in Walmart and Target stores. I’m in love with their matte shades of lipstick Hot Mama and Bawse Lady.

You don’t have to show up to the beach with that white cast anymore. In 2016, Shontay Lundy founded Black Girl Sunscreen, a moisturizing sunscreen for women of color. The line has ingredients like avocado and jojoba and can be found in Target stores.

Another brand that I love so much that I even order it for my mama is Oasis Soul Scent Co. The company produces a number of home and body products including body oils, linen sprays, and candles. My favorite oils are Southern Girl and Sweet Taboo.

PM Popcorn is a family business founded in November 2012. The company is based in Texas and makes custom popcorn in flavors like Sweet & Spicy, Caramel Drizzle, Cheese, Chocolate Drizzle, Vanilla, White Cheddar, Cookies & Cream, Ranch, and Spicy.

3 Some Chocolates has those traditional chocolates we all love but they also bring a mix of custom chocolate flavors that just might change your experience including Salted Ruby Rum, Strawberry Crush, and Ruby White Chocolate Red Velvet Cookie Crunch. I can’t pick one! Everything that I’ve ordered has been bomb!

I don’t fry food often but when I do Joe’s Fish Fry is one of my favorite fish fries. I use it to fry perch, whiting, orange roughy, lobsters and shrimp. It can also be found in Meijer, Walmart, Publix and BI-LO stores.

I hate having my picture taken but Alexandria Green made it so easy. Green the owner of Alexandria Chrisele Photography got me together and I love my headshots. She’s based in the Flint, Mich. area but is worth it. Check her out here.

The woman behind the message. Every brand needs a manager or a public relations specialist to help move them to the next level. Mine is Melissa Brown owner of Twelve15. She’s helped yo girl make it in the news, manages media, writes press releases and makes sure the Black Like Us brand is consistent across platforms. For more information shoot Brown an email mbrown2010@gmail.com.

I consistently work to support Black-owned businesses. These are just a few on my list. Don’t forget to share the Black-owned businesses you love and support in the comments.
