Following the recent news of the New England Patriot’s head coach Bill Belichick’s departure, the team has hired Jerod Mayo as its new head coach. Mayo will become the first Black man to hold the position in the organization’s 64-year history.
The football player turned coach has spent his entire NFL career in New England and has reportedly been Belichick’s planned successor since 2022 when Josh McDaniels left to coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.
At the age of 37, Mayo will not only step into the role of head coach but also claim the title of the youngest head coach in the NFL. The former linebacker was selected by the Patriots 10th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. After playing for the team for eight seasons, Mayo rejoined the Patriots as an assistant coach in 2019.
